Discernment of Information Disseminated in Main Stream Media

Good Morning, Everyone!

I’d like to encourage you all to maintain the highest degree of discernment when keeping abreast of the news in these interesting times.

Many of our popular main stream media sources have become even more shameless peddlers of terror and fear than they usually are. It is important to learn how to discern the truth from the false narratives which are being spread by “credible sources.”

For example, there are the headlines on March 27 from several main stream sources stating that “Coronavirus is killing people in New York City at the rate of one every 17 minutes.” [NYpost, FoxNews, marketwatch, the-sun]

That sounds terrifying, doesn’t it?! There are 8.6 million people living in NYC. They must be dropping like flies, right? One after another, dead, dead, dead! At this rate, what is going to happen to the population of the world? Well, let’s take a closer, rational look…

Now, according to the WHO, on March 26, 211 people in the US died of COVID-19.

If COVID-19 is killing people in New York City at the rate of one every 17 minutes … that means 84 of the 211 people who died of COVID-19 on March 26 in the US would have been in NYC.

84 people in NYC died of COVID-19 on March 26, 2020.

Compare that to “Coronavirus is killing people in New York City at the rate of one every 17 minutes.”

Technically, “Coronavirus is killing people in New York City at the rate of one every 17 minutes” is not an untrue statement … but, it certainly is extremely misleading.

It is carefully crafted to instill terror, dread, worry, hopelessness, depression and fear in the reader.

Is this ethical?

The other interesting thing about these articles is that none of them actually state the source of the numbers they are publishing … are they getting their data from the WHO Situation Reports or from the CDC?

Why is there such a large discrepancy between the numbers presented by the CDC and those presented by the WHO?

Did you know that the data the CDC is releasing includes what they call “presumptive positive cases,” not just confirmed cases? What exactly does presumptive positive mean to the people compiling the data? How much “artistic license” are they employing in their calculations?

Did you know that in Italy only 12% of the deaths attributed to COVID-19 were actually caused by COVID-19? So, the death toll in Italy has been grossly inflated by possibly 88%. https://off-guardian.org/2020/03/23/italy-only-12-of-covid19-deaths-list-covid19-as-cause/

Where can we actually go to get accurate statistics?

What can we do to petition our news agencies to behave with more civility and integrity?

Now, I am not trying to downplay the severity of this illness. We need to continue to practice good hygiene, nourish our immune systems and constrain the number of people who become seriously ill. People ARE dying. And, because we love and value each other, we will continue to be prudent.

That being said … Dr. Fauci and colleagues have published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine stating “… that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.” https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387

The take away … be prudent … refine your discernment … be mindful of how the news is affecting your emotional wellbeing and reach out to loved ones when you are feeling unstable or fearful.

You are Loved.

You are Love.

Pay Attention! They think we are “stupid” …
