Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F

Grease a Cake Pan with Coconut Oil

Slice 3 Plums or Peaches or Nectarines (or use any fruit of your choice, this is often made with cherries or blueberries)

Layer the fruit in the bottom of the cake pan, and chill the pan in the refrigerator while you are mixing the other ingredients.

1 - 13.5 oz. can of Natural Value Coconut Cream

8 Eggs, from Pastured Hens of course :)

1/4 cup maple syrup, from a local source if possible

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 cup of organic coconut flour

1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt

Blend all of the ingredients together until smooth. Use a spatula to incorporate all of the flour. Spoon the clafoutis mix over the fruit.

Bake for 50-60 minutes until cooked through, the fruit will be bubbling juices around the edge of the “cake”.

Use a knife to separate the clafoutis from the pan and turn out to cool on a counter where it is ok for the juices to drip and you can wipe up after.

Hello Good People, Oh How I Love You! You send me the most awesome questions to answer. In responding to these questions I learn so much about my own beliefs and myself, as well as expand my knowledge of health and wellness. Thank You So Much for Inspiring and Challenging Me! 


This week I got a doozy of a question, here it is paraphrased: Have the negative elite been manipulating the spiritual tenants that advocate vegetarianism?


Wow, Right?!


In short, my answer is I don’t know. But I can say this with certainty; of course a negatively-minded ruling minority wants the majority to be sick, tired and easy to control. That way the crowd is too depleted to rise up and demand change, even if they muster the ability to recognize they are being manipulated.


The idea of weaponized foods is an easy concept to espouse when we look at the assaults on the human gastrointestinal tracts and nervous systems caused by genetically modified foods, excessively hybridized foods, processed foods, antibiotics, hormones, herbicides and pesticides.


Most health advocates and spiritualists propose vegetarianism/veganism as the answer to these ills. But, is it?


When it comes to the subjects of vegetarianism and veganism, I can get pretty fired up. Why?


Well, have you ever had to advise someone who seriously thinks they are demonic because their body is rejecting the ‘healthy’ diet their spiritual teachings recommend? It is very disturbing.


I have worked with too many clients who have become seriously ill from eating balanced vegetarian/vegan diets. These are not people who have been practicing the classic unbalanced “kids version” of vegetarianism: such as Kraft macaroni and cheese with French fries and ketchup on the side. I’m talking well-educated adults eating truly balanced vegetarian/vegan meals, incorporating plant proteins and avoiding over consumption of carbohydrates.

Oh, my goodness, the physical and mental pain and misery these sweet souls endured has been heart rending! All because they refused to eat animal protein, for whatever noble reason, be it animal rights or a desire for spiritual enlightenment.


No matter what the reason, the fact remains that they were consciously choosing to do something that caused them pain. Being vegetarian/vegan was the root action causing the varied illnesses their bodies were manifesting. Illnesses such as exhibiting multiple forms of anemia at one time, manifold allergies, severe IBS/IBD (to the point of having to have parts of their colons removed), systemic inflammation, liver congestion, gallbladder dysfunction (to the point of having their gallbladders removed), endocrine disruption including thyroid and anterior pituitary dysfunction, seizures, blood sugar dysregulation, dental caries, bleeding gums, and anorexia. But the worst part has always been the spiritual depression that ensues from feeling inadequate or unworthy when the body becomes so decrepit and seemingly rejects the “spiritually advanced” diet.


It didn’t matter that what they were doing could be perceived as moral or noble; the ultimate outcome was pain, suffering and debilitation of their bodies. The conscientious and judicious application of vegetarianism/veganism was making them sick, weak and impotent physically and spiritually. And, as we all know, the body must be well and strong and healthy in order for the mind to be at ease to focus on uplifting vibration for spiritual growth.


So, let’s look at that first, let’s tackle the subject of spiritual ascension.


Now … as many of you know, I am a Kriya Yoga swami, in the tradition of the Temple of Kriya Yoga. My teacher was Goswami Kriyananda, whose teacher was Sri Shelliji, whose teacher was Paramahansa Yogananda, whose teacher was Sri Yuktashwar, whose teacher was Lahiri Mahasaya, whose teacher was Mahavatar Babaji.

Goswami Kriyananda hammered it into our eager little minds that if a spiritual teaching does not work for you, then throw it out. I can only imagine that he received the same sage advice from his preceptor and so forth back to the origins of the teachings.


The reason for this advice is two fold. One, each individual is unique and we each require a very specific set of experiences to trigger our own spiritual growth and unfoldment. One meditation may work wonders for one individual, but not resonate with another. One pranayama may work wonders for one individual, but produce an unwanted effect in another. We each have our own unique vibration that must be allowed to reverberate freely with the Love in which it was created. And we each have our own paths of experience that lead us back to the One Love of the Central Sun.


The second reason Goswami Kriyanada recommended throwing out what doesn’t work is that society evolves. In antiquity it was quite suitable and desirable to use the skin of a tiger as one of the layers of your meditation seat. Ideally this would have been a skin of a creature that died of old age and was not killed for the purpose of using its hide. At any rate, tigers are now endangered and it is NOT appropriate or feasible for every yogi on the globe to sit on a tiger skin for meditation. There are far more yogi’s than old tigers on the planet. So the instruction to use a tiger skin as part of the meditation seat needs to be discarded or amended.

In the same way, spiritual instructions to eat vegetarian/vegan diets need to be critically reviewed. In the time of the sages and rishis there was no such thing as glyphosate. We live in an outrageously toxic world. Our governments purposefully put toxic metals into our municipal waters (fluoride, chlorine), spray them into our skies (barium, nano-aluminum, cadmium, chromium and nickel) and inject them into our bodies (as thimersol and formaldehyde in vaccines). Chemicals and toxic metals are created in the burning of fossil fuels, creation of nuclear power, production of industrial and household chemicals and the inappropriate disposal of waste materials. Herbicides and pesticides are ubiquitous. It is estimated that there are over 85,000 industrial chemicals available for use in the United States alone. None of these things existed in the time that the Yoga Sutras were developed.


In order to detoxify these chemical toxins, and other endogenous chemicals like hormones, our bodies need to perform a specific process called Phase II detoxification. It takes place in the liver. Essentially it takes an oil- soluble chemical or toxin and turns it into a water-soluble substance that can be excreted in the bile or urine. To do this effectively and efficiently the body needs specific amino acids that are found in abundance in ANIMAL PROTEIN, plant sources of many of these essential amino acids are inadequate. Flat out inadequate, this is a scientific fact. This is one of the reasons why I have seen so many vegetarian/vegan clients with liver congestion and gallbladder dysfunction. Their bodies have become deficient in amino acids.


It is a genetic and biochemical fact that many of us simply cannot BE HEALTHY if we do not eat meat. The liver is one organ that exhibits the GREATEST propensity for variability from human to human. We see the most SNP variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms) in how different people’s livers detoxify. Many people exhibit variations in genes for different forms of glutathione metabolism that affect the relative toxicity of different chemicals for the individual and affect the way their bodies can detoxify and eliminate man-made or xenobiotic compounds from the body. These folks tend to have unusual, adverse or opposite reactions to pharmaceuticals … like being given a sedative and becoming outrageously hyperactive.


Simply put, some people are just not made to detoxify all of the chemicals we come in contact WITHOUT animal protein. Many of these people are Rh negative, meaning they have a blood type that has a little (-) negative sign after it (A-, B-, AB-, O-). See the blog post on What is Blood Typing.


This is not a bad thing. It does not mean the individual is less spiritual or less capable of achieving enlightenment or ascension. In fact, I am of the opinion it means something quite special. That these people, when they become enlightened, and HAVE to eat animal protein in order to maintain an optimally functioning meat suit, can serve the GREATEST blessing to the Universe by realizing the dear cost it takes for them to have an embodied experience. They KNOW they must consume consciousness that has taken form in order to maintain their own form. And there is an incredibly powerful, mystical blessing that can be generated by this knowledge. It is a way to generate an enormously influential emanation of pure Love and Gratitude.


Now I am really going to step out on a ledge here and challenge some belief systems. We know that many spiritual practices historically profess vegetarianism. We know that modern governments purposefully disseminate noxious chemicals into the environment and into our bodies. Why do they do this? Is it for the purpose of culling and controlling the herd? Is it simply because they are unethical, lazy, miserly and don’t give a flying fart about polluting the Earth and its denizens? It doesn’t matter WHY it is happening; the fact is that it IS happening.


What we do know is that people who are genuinely interested in transforming their consciousness flock to specific spiritual teachings that historically advocate vegetarianism/veganism. Many of these people, who want to transform our planet into a Heaven on Earth through the vibration of Love, are seriously weakened by the multitude of chemicals in our environments, especially if they subscribe to a vegetarian/vegan diet.


Can you see how a ruling body of negatively oriented people, who want to prevent spiritual awakening, can exert more power over the populace by subduing their greatest adversary? By purposefully polluting the environment with toxic substances they can weaken the spiritually minded, awakened souls. If you are a Warrior of Love and Light, and your body isn’t designed for or adapted to living in toxic soup, then do us all a favor: eat some clean, ethically raised meat, strengthen your body, and in doing so, let the Love-Light rip out of you like a cosmic tsunami.


Ok, conspiracies aside, if you are one of the tender souls who MUST eat animal protein in order to be comfortably embodied, the next choice you need to make is what kind of meat you will eat.


It doesn’t matter if it is bovine, ovine, porcine, poultry or fish. What does matter is how it is raised.


The modern CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation) system of mass marketed, antibiotic and hormone-laden livestock is an abhorrent, inhumane and utterly disgusting practice that needs to be stopped. There is no civilized reason for it. Science proves that permaculture, with integrated livestock, is the healthiest way for us to steward the Earth, save the planet and regain balanced ecosystems. Just Google “Permaculture Can Save The World” and read on to your hearts content.


Cheap CAFO meat is as toxic to the body as the pollutants being purposefully spewed into our air, water and soil. It is NOT a suitable way to get your animal protein and it can make you sick and prone to developing cardiovascular disease and cancer.


Find a local source for your meat. Eat pastured livestock that has been lovingly tended, raised with respect and care, and humanely butchered.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have worked with far more clients who were in dire straits due to eating conventionally raised meats and processed foods. I’m not saying that all vegetarians or vegans are ill or on their way to becoming ill. I am saying that vegetarianism/veganism can be the wrong choice for people with certain genetic predispositions. And if you find that you are one of these people, do not fall into the low vibratory traps of guilt, shame or self-degradation because you need animal protein to be most effective doing good works in the world. Just focus on doing your good works and all will be well.

And a special word to all of those spiritual teachers out there. If you are counseling people to become vegetarian/vegan, please, please, please do not berate them, shame them or make them feel guilty if their bodies reject a vegetarian/vegan diet. So what if higher density beings do not eat meat! Those beings are not embodied in this chemically toxic environment, but that beautiful, magnificent Earthling in front of you is. And if their body cannot cope with the toxins while eating a vegetarian/vegan diet then let them eat meat wisely. If they are sick and weak they cannot experience Joy and Love to the fullest potential. They cannot participate in raising the vibration of mass consciousness as effectively when they are in physical pain. So, think out of the box, step out of your ideals and dogma and focus on the Love. Be Practical, Be Real, Love.

What is Blood Typing and How is it Different from Blood Chemistry?

Someone recently asked me a great question:


What is Blood Typing and How is it Different from Blood Chemistry?


The most succinct answer is that Blood Typing tells you your ABO blood group and Rh factor … and that Blood Chemistry tells you your biochemistry. But, what does that mean in plain English?!


As we all know, people have different types of blood. This is important because some types of blood are not compatible with others and a transfusion of incompatible blood can be fatal.


The plasma membranes of red blood cells (RBCs) have highly specific glycoproteins at their external surfaces. These glycoproteins act as antigens that induce an immune response, like the production of antibodies. If you are given blood from an incompatible blood type your RBC antigens will mount an immune response to destroy the foreign RBCs.


According to my favorite Anatomy textbook by Elaine Marieb “There are a least 30 common varieties of naturally occurring red blood cell antigens in humans. Besides these, there are perhaps 100 others that occur in individual families (“private antigens”) rather than in the general population. The presence or absence of each antigen allows each person’s blood cells to be classified into several different blood groups.” The antigens determine the ABO and Rh blood groups.


The ABO Blood Group System as Described by the Red Cross:


There are four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of two antigens (A and B) on the surface of red blood cells:


  • Group A – has only the A antigen on red cells (and B antibody in the plasma)
  • Group B – has only the B antigen on red cells (and A antibody in the plasma)
  • Group AB – has both A and B antigens on red cells (but neither A nor B antibody in the plasma)
  • Group O – has neither A nor B antigens on red cells (but both A and B antibody are in the plasma)


In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a third antigen called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or absent ( – ). In general, Rh negative blood is given to Rh-negative patients, and Rh positive blood or Rh negative blood may be given to Rh positive patients. Most Americans (about 85%) are Rh positive.


  • The universal red cell donor has Type O negative blood type.
  • The universal plasma donor has Type AB blood type.


The + and – symbols after your blood group designate if you are Rh positive or Rh negative. For example:


If you have A+ blood this means that you have A antigen on red cells, B antibody in the plasma and the Rh Factor is present.


If you have A- blood this means that you have A antigen on red cells, B antibody in the plasma and the Rh Factor is NOT present.

More on Rh factor


Rh factor is important to know about because if an Rh- person receives Rh+ blood, the immune systems becomes sensitized and shortly after the transfusion it will begin to produced antibodies against the Rh+ blood.


We also keep track of Rh factor because women with Rh- blood that become pregnant with a baby that has Rh+ blood will start to make antigens against the Rh+ blood of the fetus. These women can usually bring their first Rh+ baby healthily to term; however if they become pregnant again with an Rh+ baby their bodies will attack the fetus.


There are at least 8 different types of Rh agglutinogens (antigens that promote “agglutination” or “clumping” of RBCs) that can make a person Rh positive. Being Rh negative is a recessive trait. What this mean is that if an individual has no functional Rh genes, they are classified as Rh negative. If a person inherits one Rh gene from one parent (Rh+), and one non-functioning Rh gene from the other parent (Rh-), they will be designated as an Rh+ phenotype. This is how two Rh+ parents can produce Rh- offspring if the offspring each inherit only the Rh- alleles.


I find Rh factor extremely interesting. It reminds me that there is still so much we do not understand about our bodies, our history and our origins. Current medical science simply cannot explain why some people do NOT have the Rh factor … it is literally inexplicable using our current paradigms of scientific inquiry.


There are a lot of interesting theories on the origin of Rh-negative bloodlines that cross the full expanse of the imagination encompassing everything from carbon dioxide clearance to genetic experimentation by Ancient Aliens or the bloodline of Jesus the Christ. None of these theories can be proved at this time.


What we do know for certain is that Rh-negative people are found most predominantly in genealogies of Irish, Scottish, Basque, Western European and European Jewish descent.


The least controversial and most commonly accepted scientific explanation is that the Rh-negative allele is a mutation that developed after populations migrated out of Africa to Europe; and that the Rh-negative allele is associated with a need to speed the transfer of carbon dioxide in and out of RBCs due to higher levels of CO2 in the region.


But, the truth of the matter is we do not know the origins of the Rh-negative phenotype … and that is OK J

The Blood Type Diet


Personally, I do not recommend that everyone choose a diet based upon their blood group alone. The blood type diet is popular, very interesting and accurate about many physical aspects. And, I know from personal experience that it is too generalized to work for everyone. According to blood typing I should flourish on a vegetarian diet. In fact, I was a vegetarian for 10 years, not because I wanted to follow the blood type diet, but because a physician recommended vegetarianism when I had my first gallbladder attack.


Over that 10-year period in which I was a vegetarian my health deteriorated immensely. And in my efforts to regain health and vitality I began studying nutrition and Kriya yoga with a passion. I can assure you, I was eating a “balanced” vegetarian diet.  Additionally, vegetarianism was very attractive to me from a philosophical standpoint, but it did not suit my body in the least. I went from having gallbladder troubles to also having daily IBS, arthritis, psoriasis, anterior pituitary dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction, blood sugar dysregulation, adrenal fatigue, dental cavities and soft bloody gums. I was a mess! I was very uncomfortable and my body was weak.


So, let me just say this. Though the blood typing diet is fun to explore to see if your personality traits match those characterized by your blood group … in my search for wellness I found that there is SO MUCH MORE involved in determining what is the best diet for an individual than blood type alone. You also have to consider things like how your nervous system is wired, how your immune system reacts, what your genetic predispositions are and what epigenetic factors are acting upon your body.


This is where Blood CHEMISTRY can help illuminate how your body is functioning and responding to your environment and the foods that you are consuming. Blood CHEMISTRY reveals your personal biochemistry … it reveals the chemical and physicochemical processes that are occurring within your body at the time the blood is drawn.

The Pineal Gland

I have received some interesting questions from people wanting to know how much of what is currently being disseminated about the pineal gland in metaphysical circles has a valid basis in anatomy and physiology. With all the “fake news” circulating in the realm of health care, it is challenging to get to the root truth of any subject … no matter if the source is medical science or metaphysics.


Interestingly one of my favorite go-to college textbooks on Anatomy and Physiology (Marieb 4th edition) has only 4 paragraphs describing the pineal gland. Wow, that’s pitiful! Why is so little information shared? Do we really know so little about this wonderful pinecone shaped gland? Or is information being suppressed?


Metaphysical theorists or spiritualists might say knowledge of the pineal gland is restrained because the ruling elite does not want us to access and utilize cognitive power to balance self-conscious awareness. Medical scientists might say it is simply because we haven’t studied the pineal gland enough to know more.


What we can all agree on is that the pineal gland hangs from the roof of the third ventricle of the diencephalon in the brain. It is located in an area called the epithalamus, near the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres of the brain. Nearly all vertebrae species have a pineal gland, not just human beings. In medical science it is studied as a part of the endocrine system (the system in the body that regulates hormones).

The pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin and appears to play a role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle and some aspects of mood, but this is not well understood. Its secretory cells, called pinealocytes, are arranged in compact cords and clusters and in between these clusters are dense particles containing calcium salts. These dense particles are referred to as “brain-sand” or “pineal sand” and show up on X-rays because they are radiopaque. Brain-sand is composed of calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, magnesium phosphate and ammonium phosphate. The accumulation of brain-sand increases over time and is associated with aging.


Wikipedia states that calcification of the pineal gland is largely associated with brain sand. It is common even in young adults, and has been observed in children as young as two years of age. “Calcification rates vary widely by country and correlate with an increase in age, with calcification occurring in an estimated 40% of Americans by their 17th year.” Recent studies have shown that the degree of pineal gland calcification is significantly higher in patients with Alzheimer’s disease vs. other types of dementia.


According to my text books the endocrine function of the pineal gland is still somewhat of a mystery and this is why there is so little information shared about it. Neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine have all been isolated within the pineal gland, but its only major secretory product is melatonin. Researchers have recently found that the pineal gland can also produce the hallucinogen N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) under certain circumstances, though my textbooks do not describe what these certain circumstances might be.


DMT has not only been found in the pineal gland but also in “motor neurons in the spinal cord and in the retina. While DMT is present in these tissues, there has yet to be a definitive determination of whether DMT is actually synthesized in these tissues and, if so, how it is utilized or released from the tissues under normal or altered physiological conditions.” ( DOI 10.1002/bmc.2981)


It seems that the pineal gland can indeed play a role in a person’s ability to experience metaphysical proficiency through altered states of consciousness, and that role is not really being explored through popular medical science at this time. Another metaphysical link to the pineal gland has to do with retinal-like tissues found in pinealocytes.


The pineal gland indirectly receives input from the visual pathways concerning the intensity and duration of daylight, and in this way regulates the production of the hormone melatonin (that helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body’s circadian rhythm).


Pinealocytes seem to have evolutionary similarities to the retinal cells in the eye, though they are distinctly different from retinal cells. Phototransduction genes are present in both the DNA of the retina and the DNA of pinealocytes in humans. However, pinealocytes in lampreys, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds actually retain photosensitivity. From what I can ascertain, the pinealocytes in humans do not retain photosensitivtiy. Because of its correspondences to the retina the pineal gland is metaphysically thought to be the third eye, the seat of occult power and wisdom, and how we are able to perceive things clairvoyantly. Of course, medical science that we know of at this time has absolutely no way of studying or confirming this theory. And, that does not mean that it is not an excellent explanation for the very real phenomena of remote viewing and clairvoyance.



Another important fact about the pineal gland (especially in thinking about its health and vigor) is that the pineal gland is not protected by the blood-brain barrier system. Interestingly it receives a profuse supply of blood, second only to the kidneys. This means that whatever is coursing through the blood, whether nutrients or toxins, will have a profound effect upon the pineal gland.


So, this is what I can surmise … medical science concerning the pineal gland is quite limited, or at least the science that we are publicly privy to.


I think it is really helpful to acknowledge that the world in which we live is not exactly a Realm of Knowledge. It is a realm of veils and questions and NOT knowing. It is not wise to rely solely upon scientific data for our knowledge, because scientific means and measures are undeniably inhibited and incomplete. Yet they are helpful in aiding us to make choices.


And when it comes to the health of the pineal gland, we do need to be able to make some informed decisions.


To do this, let’s review a few Basic Neuroscience Concepts:


Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) and is used to gain a better understanding of how the brain and mind function. As Dr. Kharrazzian puts it: the brain is the center of homeostasis for all aspects of physiological function including digestion, hormone production, immune modulation, learning, memory, mood and sleep.


The nervous system, immune system (75-80% is estimated to be in the gut) and endocrine system (regulates hormones) all influence each other in a co-creative web of continual interactions. Imbalance in one will affect the others.


Therefore the health and proper functioning of the pineal gland depends upon the health and proper functioning of the nervous system, immune system and endocrine system.


Tips for a Healthy Nervous System:


For optimal health and function a neuron needs glucose, stimulation and oxygen.  (See Remède Physique Neurotransmitters | Brain Health).


Just because neurons need glucose, doesn’t mean that eating lots of carbs and sugars is the best way to feed the brain. In fact it is not. Blood glucose levels need to be steady, not too high and not too low. Optimizing blood sugar handling is a critical component to healthy brain and pineal function. When neurons are not stimulated, they become unhealthy due to their loss of intracellular protein production, this is known as transneural degeneration. Now, stimulation of neurons does not necessarily refer to playing chess or doing crossword puzzles and brainteasers. The only constant stimulation to the brain is the activation of muscle spindles by gravity. So, PHYSICAL EXERCISE becomes a really important tool in maintaining a healthy brain and pineal gland, not just by providing neuronal stimulation but by increasing oxygen in the blood and ATP production as well.


Oxygen levels in the brain are also affected by ATP production and anemia. ATP production is enhanced by neuronal stimulation, like physical and cognitive exercise. And anemia is a condition wherein the red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood is deficient, resulting in diminished capacity to transport oxygen to the cells. There are 12 different ways in which a person can develop anemia and the best way to identify them is through a functional comprehensive metabolic blood screening (See Remède Physique Bloodwork). Each type of anemia requires a different approach to alleviating it. When people think of anemia, they usually think it is due to iron deficiency, but that is only one type of anemia. And supplementing with iron, when you do not need it, or when there is a high degree of systemic inflammation can lead to cellular damage. Identifying and properly treating anemia is very important.


Tips for a Healthy Immune System:

First and foremost identify hidden food sensitivities and remove the offending foods from your diet. You can accomplish this by performing a Pulse Test.


If necessary, nourish and restore the GI tract and optimize gut flora.


Next identify any burdens to the immune system using functional blood chemistry. Viral, bacterial, parasitic and toxic burdens will all require different, very specific approaches.


Tips for a Healthy Endocrine System: blood sugar balance and stress management lie at the heart of optimal hormone levels. (See Remède Physique Hormones).


What about Decalcifying the Pineal Gland?


Yes, we definitely want to decalcify the pineal gland! Anytime calcium builds up in the body pain and distress ensue … from kidneys stones to gallstones, calcification of arteries to bone spurs.


·       The way to start decalcifying the pineal is to eat a clean diet of high vibratory foods. These are nutrient dense whole foods and they can include meats.


·       Do not take unbalanced mineral supplements to ward of osteoporosis. There are so many factors involved in maintaining healthy bone tissue and calcium and magnesium play only a small part. Healthy bone mass depends on maintaining the balance between the resorption and formation phases of bone remodeling. When this balance is disrupted the result is the loss of bone mass and increased bone fragility. You may need vitamin D or essential fatty acids rather than mineral supplementation. Additionally, taking only one mineral – like, just taking calcium supplements or just taking magnesium supplements, can push the ratio of the minerals out of sync with each other, leading to a disruption of the bone resorption-formation balance. I recommend working with a professional who can functionally analyze your blood chemistry to identify which processes in your unique body need support.


·       Many people recommend the use of iodine supplements or iodine rich foods to help decalcify the pineal gland. This is because fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine are all in the same family of elements in the periodic table. Flourine and chlorine can be found in municipal drinking water. Flouride is an ingredient in many toothpastes and mouth rinses. Bromine is an additive in processed foods, especially baked goods. When these three halide anions are over abundant the body will isolate them in a calcium husk and deposit the calcium in different organs and tissues, like the pineal gland. Increased iodine intake is therefore recommended to help reduce the effect of fluoridated, chlorinated water and processed foods. However, and this is really important to know, iodine supplementation is absolutely horrible for people who’s bodies have developed Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Thyroid Reaction and are actively attacking TPO. TPO  produces T3 and T4 by pumping iodine into the thyroid gland. The more idone you take, the more TPO has to work. But if the body is attacking TPO and TPO is low, the body then has to make more TPO. So the iodine stimulates more TPO production. Additionally, if the body is wired toward an autoimmune reaction but has not yet developed it then taking iodine can actually trigger it to manifest. Taking exogenous iodine is like adding fuel to the autoimmune fire. Excess iodine can make these people much sicker.


·       So, rather than taking iodine, the better solution is to stop drinking chlorinated, fluoridated water. Purchase a high quality drinking water filter. We have been using Aquasana whole house and under the sink filters in our home for years and have been extremely pleased.


·       There are a number of supplements besides iodine that are recommended for assisting in the decalcification of the pineal gland, I highly recommend working with a trained nutritional therapy practitioner who performs functional blood chemistry analysis to determine what will work best for you. There are so many excellent supplements, but not all of them work equally well for each individual. For instance, turmeric is fantastic for many people, but can cause IBS or GERD in others. MSM can work fabulously for some but cause allergic skin reactions or diarrhea in others. Give yourself permission to take advantage of the expertise of natural healers. They want to help and are usually more than happy to share their knowledge.


·       Work with a trained nutritional therapy practitioner to undergo a detoxification program customized to your needs, including possible heavy metal burdens. (See Remède Physique Toxic Metals).



One final note on neuronal stimulation and decalcification of the pineal gland:


If you are seeking a spiritual awakening or looking to enhance or accelerate the awakening process then you must exercise the parts of the brain (like the pineal gland) that will support the process. We exercise the pineal gland through meditation and yogic pranayama. There are many different ways in which to practice meditation and pranayama. I encourage you to seek out a modality that speaks to your vision of Life, learn the techniques and practice them regularly with joy.

The Differences Between Being Empathetic, Highly Sensitive or Empathic

You may have seen or heard recently about people who are being categorized as highly sensitive or empathic. I’ve received some questions asking to clarify exactly what this means and how it differs from being empathetic.


According to Psychology Today, empathy is the experience of understanding another person’s condition from their perspective. It is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s or life form’s frame of reference. (Wikipedia)


Hypothetically every person has the capability to cultivate and enhance their ability to feel empathy for all life forms. For most people, being empathetic is a choice.


Being empathic or a highly sensitive person is quite a bit different. It has to do with how your nervous system is put together, rather than how you choose to use your cognitive faculties to perceive the world. You see … each person’s nervous system is as unique as his or her fingerprints.


Though there is a basic overriding blueprint for the form of the body and the structures within it, each body is completely and utterly distinctive from all others, even in identical twins.


Take for instance the nervous system or the cardiovascular system. There are main branches of nerves or cardiovascular vessels that are basically the same root form in most individuals, but each little branching dendrite or capillary follows its own pattern and path. No two people are the same. Each person’s cardiovascular system or nervous system is as individualized as their fingerprints.



To me this is an undeniable testament to how special and unique each and every person is. No one is more special than anyone else. No one is having any more valid or important an experience of Life than any one else. All Life is special, unique and inestimably valuable. All the varied experiences of Life, all the varied ways to experience Life, are important and of immense value to expanding and balancing our shared self-conscious awareness.


With that being said, there is a small percentage of the population that has a nervous system wired to be highly sensitive and there is an even smaller percentage of the population that is wired to be empathic. Just like there is a small percentage of the population that has red hair and brown eyes and an even smaller percentage of the population that has red hair and blue eyes. Even though red hair and blue eyes is the least common hair-eye combination there are millions of blue-eyed ginger haired people in the world. And they are having no more effective a human experience than any one with black hair and brown eyes or blonde hair and green eyes. It is all good! There is no need to aggrandize people who have highly sensitive or empathic nervous systems anymore than those who have a rare combination of hair and eye color.



Now that I have driven that point into the ground, it is estimated that about 15-20% of the human population has a nervous system that is highly sensitive to bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, loud noises, and violence or exuberance in others. Biologists have also identified this trait in over 100 species from fruit flies to dogs and cats, so it is not exclusive to primates like human beings. (See the work of Dr. Elaine Aron).


Highly Sensitive People are often described as being overly fussy, shy, inhibited or neurotic. They tend to notice more about what is going on around them and can be easily over stimulated when things are too intense, complex, chaotic or novel for a long time. Well-adjusted highly sensitive people learn to cope with their bodies and their mind’s responses to their finely tuned nervous systems by avoiding over stimulus, withdrawing from crowds, and diligently guarding their private time.


An empath, on the other hand, has an entirely different experience. Like highly sensitive people, an empath’s nervous system is very good at receiving data. The empathic nervous system easily perceives data from animate as well as inanimate objects on a subtle as well as gross level in an internalized fashion (from the inside out) and this internalization is what makes the experience distinctive. The highly sensitive person perceives data in an externalized fashion (from the outside in) only at a much more intense volume than a typically wired nervous system.


For an empath it is not about having finely tuned super senses, it is about experiencing within their own body what another living being is experiencing. This manifests in many ways: like literally experiencing an emotion when another person is experiencing the emotion – even if the other person is not outwardly expressing the emotion; being able to experience emotions or trauma that have been stored inside another person’s body tissues; sensing a physical pain in the body that mirrors another person’s physical pain; or even being able to perceive the work being done by atoms of physical matter as they hold themselves together in physical form.


It is very easy for an empath to become overloaded in social situations, or even out taking a hike in nature.


I have been asked to describe what an empathic overload is like, and I can only speak from my own experience.


For me, an empathic overload involves my normal physical senses shutting down, just as in yogic pratyahara (aka the in-turning of senses). There is a very distinct sensation of the current of energy being diverted away from the gross nervous system and redirected into the subtle nervous system of the subtle body. I begin to hear not with my physical ears, but with my astral ears. When pratyahara occurs I hear, see or feel the subtle energetic forces that are holding everything together in this plane of existence. It is so loud and overpowering I cannot perceive what is going on in the denser plane, and I have not mastered the ability to keep my physical senses online when the astral ones have usurped power. I imagine there are many adept yogis out and about who can do this. I am not one of them.


There is no way to really describe the sensations, but as I work to bring my focus back to the physical plane and use my physical senses to communicate with those around me I feel something that is a little bit like static electricity INSIDE my nervous system. This is not like getting shocked by static electricity from something outside of the body that you touch. It is not like static building up along the clothing or skin when you rub your feet across the carpet. It is completely internal, it is a concentration of energy that builds up from the friction between the subtle nervous system rubbing against and switching over to the dense/gross/physical nervous system.


This is just a brief description of what I experience and I imagine that due to the uniqueness of each and every one of us, there are as many ways to have empathic experiences as there are nervous systems.


Additionally, any person that wants to experience yogic pratyahara can achieve this by following and practicing Kriya Yoga instruction. (I recommend Kriology: The Mystical Tradition of Kriya Yoga.) You do not need to have an empathically wired nervous system or even a highly sensitive one to achieve pratyahara. In fact, it is probably much easier to achieve pratyahara with a typically wired nervous system than a highly sensitive one, because there will be less distractions.


At this time, there is no scientific understanding of why some people are empathic or highly sensitive. And, there seems to be some potential in the new discovery and study of mirror neurons.


A mirror neuron is a neuron that fires both when an animal acts and when the animal observes the same action performed by another. It is proposed that mirror neurons originated from a genetic predisposition to facilitate action understanding. (Wikipedia)


One current theory is that empaths have nervous systems with more mirror neurons or more active mirror neurons. Having an empathically wired nervous system or a highly sensitive nervous system seems to be a genetic trait, passed down for generations; just like Rh-negative blood or the color of your hair.


Highly Sensitive People and Empaths do not necessarily have ESP. Extra Sensory Perception, or, as my yoga teacher liked to term it Extraordinary Spiritual Potential, is something everyone can develop. ESP involves skills like clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience, and psychometry. For more information on developing these abilities I recommend Goswami Kriyananda’s book Extraordinary Spiritual Potential and the videos found on


Keep in mind that in 2016 scientists discovered a new organ in the human intestinal tract called the mesentery. For as long as we have been dissecting and studying our bodies (hundreds of years), medical scientists only just recently realized that the mesentery was an individualized organ. My point is that there is quite a lot we still do not understand or even know about the body in general and the nervous system in particular. And hopefully, we will continue to expand our understanding and knowledge as the years progress.


For the meantime, there is absolutely no conclusive scientific explanation as to why some people are highly sensitive or why they are empathic. And indeed there is still quite a bit of speculation in cognitive neuroscience and cognitive psychology regarding high sensitivity or empathic abilities. It may take quite some time before these nuances are medically accepted. There are plenty of resources and forums online for both highly sensitive people and empaths. I invite you to try finding one that speaks to your vision of life and enjoy the fellowship provided there.

Navigating The News :: Using Education & Intuition


Fake News has been a hot topic of late, and I find this very interesting.


In the realm of health related information, Fake News has been rampant for decades, but it hasn’t really captured the attention of our mass consciousness.


For instance … think about all of the ‘studies’ in the news that support the latest phenomenal pharmaceuticals … and then think for a moment about how many of these miracle cures are recalled 5, 10, 15+ years after their release due to incontrovertible evidence that they cause harm.


Here is a short list of just a few prescription drugs that were pulled from the market. As you can see, they span a wide range of conditions.


·       Actuane used for acne, on the market for 27 years, recalled for causing birth defects, Irritable Bowel Disease (like Crohn’s) and suicidal tendencies

·       Baycol a statin used for cholesterol reduction, on the market for 3 years and recalled for causing kidney failure and death

·       Bextra a NSAID pain reliever, on the market for 3 years, recalled for causing heart attack, stroke and death.

·       Darvon and Darvocet opioid pain relievers, on the market for 55 years and known to be the cause of over 2,000 reported deaths

·       DES a synthetic estrogen on the market for 31 years and recalled for causing cancer among other complications

·       Lotronex a drug designed to treat IBS and on the market for less than a year because it caused 49 cases of ischemic colitis (stopped the blood supply to the colon) and 5 deaths


It all just makes me think, how much of the information we receive in the media is actually factual and accurate. Aside from health care, how many other realms of expertise are tainted by deceptions? National News, World News, Politics, Business, Technology, Science, Pop Culture, Education, etc.


As Dr. Mercola recently explained “90 percent of U.S. media is controlled by six corporations, making it virtually impossible to get any information that is not consistent with their agenda to maximize their profits.”


So, how do we navigate the world of Fake News, Marketed News, Fabrications and Misrepresentations?


Education and Intuition are the two tools that are readily available to everyone.


Educate yourself as much as possible upon a subject or find someone you trust who is educating him/her-self upon a subject and ask them questions.


Make sure that you are not receiving filtered or marketed data. For instance, allopathic nutritional education is dictated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (aka American Dietetics Association) that asserts they offer “authoritative information” on diet and nutrition.


In their words “The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The Academy is committed to improving the public's health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy.”


Their corporate sponsors at the time I am writing this include: the National Dairy Council, Abbott Nutrition (“a global health care company developing products and technologies that span the breadth of health care”), BENEO-Institute (a “functional ingredient manufacturer” making products out of “sugar beet, rice and wheat”), Splenda Sweeteners (makers of the artificial sweetener sucralose. Studies show that Splenda can contribute to weight gain, reduce the beneficial bacteria population in your gut, increase the pH level in your intestines, and effect an important glycoprotein in your body responsible for crucial functions), Sunsweet Growers (makers of dried fruit and juices which contain high quantities of inflammatory fructose), Campbell Soup Company (whose slogan is “Real food that matters for life’s moments.” How many of you would say that the highly processed ingredients in canned soup are real food?). In the past Kellog’s, Pepsi Co and Coca Cola Co have also been corporate sponsors.


Corporate Sponsorship is how medical doctors and dieticians can end up recommending “healing”, “anti-inflammatory diets” that include inflammatory foods such as whole grains, dairy, fruits and artificial sweeteners. In educating yourself about biochemistry and physiology it becomes impossible to resolve that these inflammatory foods could ever be included in a “healing” regenerative diet.


Step One in Navigating the News is to Educate and Inform Yourself with Un-marketed Data.


This leads us to the question of how to recognize marketed data. Aside from trying to ascertain which companies funded the research that is being proffered, recognizing marketed data can become a tricky task to accomplish and one thing that can be helpful is refining your Intuition.


 What is intuition?


Merriam-Webster gives us the following definition:


1:  quick and ready insight

2a :  immediate apprehension or cognition

2b :  knowledge or conviction gained by intuition

2c :  the power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference


My yoga preceptor, Goswami Kriyananda, explained intuition this way: “ Spiritual and psychic development is based upon various occult techniques that allow you to focus your mind and attune it, and at the same time release the balanced energies from the subconscious mind. These balanced energies are called intuitional forces.”


He goes on to explain that these intuitional forces “like all of the other natural forces of life, are always available to humanity. It is simply a matter of becoming aware and harnessing them.”


I really like the way Goswami Kriyananda describes intuition as a skill that is available to everyone and it is something we can cultivate and enhance.


Step Two in Navigating the News is to Develop Your Inuition.


The first step to improving your intuition is quieting the mind and storing prana. As Goswami Kriyananda teaches: “there is a yogic theory which states that the majority of people are unaware of their intuition or their psychic nature simply because their minds are distracted”


Simplify your life where possible. Every day take some time to sit quietly with absolutely no distractions. Just observe the world around you, or close your eyes and watch your breath as it moves gently through the nostrils. You do not have to learn how to meditate if you do not want to (but please consider it ;) Give yourself a moment to do nothing but cultivate a sense of inner leisure, no worries, no hurries.


The next step to improving your intuition is to increase prana or life force energy in your physical body. “Prana is contained in the water you drink, the oxygen you breathe, the sunlight you absorb and live in, the food you eat and is the essence of life.”


Drink filtered water. Go out in nature and breathe deeply air that is purified by the sun, the trees and moving water. Let the morning sunlight caress your skin. Eat High Vibratory Foods. Exercise.


If you are interested in more advanced techniques for the absorption and storing of pranic energy, seek out a well-studied Yoga teacher or spiritual practitioner of your choice, there are many disclipines to choose from.


The brain is essential for every aspect of our physiology and cognitive and emotional experiences. And it needs two things to function properly: it needs to be activated and it needs the appropriate biochemical environment. By following these basic guidelines for quieting the mind and storing prana you do two things to improve cognition and discernment:


1.     you turn down the volume of external and internal chatter so you can figure out what you really think

2.     you nourish your central nervous system


It is much easier to discern fact from fiction when your brain is functioning optimally and when you have been practicing intuition.


When you read something, and you are not sure whether it is fact or fiction, take a moment to allow the brain to quiet. Do not think about anything in particular. Just breathe. When you feel your mind settle and quiet, ask yourself: is this true? And see what immediately pops into your head. It might be a resounding YES, NO, or even MAYBE. If your intuition tells you MAYBE, then perhaps part of what you have read or heard is true and part is false.


If you cannot come to a confident decision about the subject, talk to someone whose brainpower and intuition you trust and see what they have to say about it. It may take awhile for anyone to untangle the complex webs of deception that are woven in the media.

Coping With Egotism in Health Care

We have all either directly experienced Egotism in the Health Care System or known someone who has, haven’t we? It takes many forms like arrogance, authoritarianism, condescension, elitism and officiousness or even manipulation by using fear tactics.


The reasons behind WHY it occurs do not really matter, all that matters is that it does occur and when it does we need a strategy for coping with it in a balanced and productive manner.


There will be as many well-adjusted ways to handle medical egotism, as there are personalities. Each person and each situation will require a different approach.


Encountering medical egotism can make the patient feel off balance and trigger strong sensations of anger, resentment, inferiority, foolhardiness, or feeling disrespected. This can naturally prompt the patient to act impulsively in a defensive manner that further feeds the egotism of the health care professional. When this happens it doesn’t benefit either person involved.

My counsel is to allow yourself permission to acknowledge and claim your own power before you set foot in the clinician’s office.


Something that has helped me in dealing with these challenging situations is gaining a deeper esoteric understanding of how I am ‘wired’ and what ‘knee-jerk’ responses I am likely to have in difficult circumstances. Astrology really helped me to do this. Yes … astrology, paired with some deep daily ‘tarka’ (aka the spiritual practice of self reflection).


I studied astrology during Kriya Yoga Seminary. My teacher described it to be a science and spiritual art, involving precise mathematical calculations while offering arcane explanations of the paradoxes of existence and revealing our unique, individual personality “recipes”. When relating with other people, it helps to really know yourself, how you tend to think and what types of intelligences are your strengths.

Think about cooking a dish in the kitchen for a moment. Let’s say you have 3 spices to work with: salt, pepper and garlic. The amount of salt, pepper and garlic that you use can radically change how your dish tastes, and the possibilities of flavors are inestimable just using 3 spices.


The planets in your astrological chart are like the spices. When you consider that there are 10 planets, wow, the possibilities for personality expression are infinite. And we haven’t even discussed the signs, houses or aspects that influence the planets.


Truly, each person’s personality is unique and it is each of our own responsibility to figure out how to polish and enhance our own distinctive personality to its best expression. Only you can accomplish this, no one else can do it for you.


Our interactions with other people afford us an opportunity to see the rough edges of our own personalities, these are the rough edges that need to be polished so that we do not cause others pain when our personalities intermingle.


Interfacing with an egotistical health care professional is excellent catalyst for observing our own personalities and learning how to respond in a way that is most harmonious for everyone involved. It is so easy for our feelings to be hurt or to feel indignant when we perceive we are being insulted or belittled. And when this happens it doesn’t serve anyone if we react by lashing out. Knowing your personality traits and innate intelligences affords you an opportunity to respond respectfully, rather than react senselessly.


I will give a quick example using my own natal chart.


In the recipe that governs how my personality is expressed, my Sun Sign, Moon and Ascendant are all ruled by Mercury, the symbol of communications and mentality.


The way I am wired, when I am balanced and expressing my best attributes I am articulate, diplomatic and have good judgment. But when I get flustered and I am imbalanced I am indecisive, careless and nervous. When I am confronted with a situation wherein someone challenges my expertise or experience, I tend to want to know what it is that they know that makes them think differently than me. What have they learned, that I do not yet know, that causes them to have the opinion that they have or to choose a particular path of action.


I like to try and understand. And I experience this as a way to keep an open mind.


This approach certainly will not work for everyone. For instance, I recently saw an episode of Dr. Who wherein The Doctor exclaims, “I try NEVER to understand, it’s called an open mind.” I laughed so hard because it is 180 degrees opposite of the way I am wired. Certainly this contradictory approach can work as magically as the Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver for someone who is wired differently than me.



Sometimes I find I must allow myself to let go and not pursue trying to educate my antagonist. Knowing how I am wired, you can imagine how challenging that is for me to do, by nature I am compelled to communicate knowledge.


As we have all experienced, it is not uncommon to run into a person who knows what they know and does not want to learn anything new. They are closed minded and ridged in their convictions. For me, it is very important to recognize this as soon as possible so that my interactions do not cause unnecessary discomfort.


Like everyone, I often need to remind myself that Life is an Experiment in Experience and there is no one right way to experience anything. It is ok to make mistakes and get tripped up, flustered and tongued tied. It is OK if I occasionally talk a person into a state of glaze-eyed mesmer, or if I neglect an opportunity to instruct someone who is in dire need of re-education. As one of my teachers likes to say: it is ALL Good.


I will not offer detailed specifics in how to cope with egotism, since there will be such great variety in how each of us communicates; but I will offer some generalities.


The essence of coping with egotism in health care or coping with any individual who’s personality rubs yours the wrong way is to continuously return to the principle of forgiveness … first and foremost for yourself, especially if you do not behave up to your own standards, and secondly for the other party involved.


Learn how you are wired and work with your strengths. Allow yourself to be accepting of and a little fascinated by other people who have personalities that are especially discordant with your own. We are not clones here; we are all different.


If time is not of the essence, give yourself permission to ask your clinician for more information and more time in which to study and come to an informed decision about your health care options. Allow yourself to seek out information and expertise from varied sources so you are not only being given data that supports a one-sided opinion or approach.


Remember, as much as your health care practitioners have studied the body, each individual body is completely unique. The only person who will know your body intimately is YOU, you are the one living in it. You are the one who’s thoughts and actions have built it. You will always know your body best.


Try not to dwell too much on the bad experience. Figure out how much of your precious time and brainpower you really want to expend on rehashing the unpleasant experience. Recognize that it happened, and seek out a different health care professional if necessary.
