Hatha Yoga

"Ha" meaning Sun and "tha" meaning Moon, Hatha Yoga is commonly translated as "bringing union to pairs of opposites."  Through physical postures and breath work the practice of Hatha Yoga prepares the body and mind for meditation and expanded states of self awareness.

As a yoga teacher I am strongly influenced by Structural Integration.  I teach Hatha from the premise that when a body is aligned and balanced it moves with greater ease.  It requires less energy to function and good posture and breathing become effortless.

This happens because bones bear weight and muscles move.  When the bones are brought into alignment the weight of the body is naturally distributed, the muscles are then used to create safe opening for the joints and to stabilize the joints when sustaining a pose.

If a pose is practiced with improper alignment the muscles will not be able to relax after the pose is released.  The flow of energy (prana) and bodily fluids is restricted in hypertonic areas.  This results in a state of chronic muscular contraction and structural and energetic imbalance rather than the overall state of balance that can be cultivated by the practice of yoga.

If the skeletal system is in proper alignment, strong muscular action will not produce muscular tightness because the myofascial system will be able to release and relax after the action is completed.  When the musculoskeletal system is in balance there is a free flowing of bodily energy and fluids which allows healthy contraction and relaxation of the muscles to occur.

Learning to align the body within the field of gravity transfers into greater ease of being during everyday life.

Yoga chitta vritti nirodha. ~  Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.
